Pygmalion is George Bernard Shaw’s wry take on the ancient legend of the sculptor who fell in love with his masterpiece. The play famously inspired Lerner & Loewe’s My Fair Lady, and the characters and action of Pygmalion will be familiar to any fan of the musical. Pygmalion is an incisive analysis of the brutal battles for power, privilege, dignity, and control between upper and lower class, age and youth, teacher and student, man and woman. In this case, the battleground is the mouth of Liza Doolittle, a slangy young street vendor who attracts the obsessive attention (strictly scientific, mind you) of Professor Henry Higgins, phonetician extraordinaire.
